Description

Ketamil is a dissociative anaesthetic for use singly or in combination with muscle relaxants or tranquilisers in horses, cattle, sheep, pigs, dogs, cats, goats, reptiles, birds, wombats, koalas, kangaroos, camels and deer.

Dosage and Admin

Horses. Ketamine base 2.2 mg/kg bodyweight (Ketamil Injection 10 mL/450 kg bodyweight) intravenously combined with xylazine base 1.1 mg/kg bodyweight (Ilium Xylazil 100 Injection 5 mL/450 kg bodyweight) intravenously provides analgesia and light anaesthesia.
Cattle. Ketamine base 2.0 mg/kg bodyweight (Ketamil Injection 8 mL/400 kg bodyweight) intravenously given simultaneously with xylazine base 0.1 to 0.2 mg/kg bodyweight (Xylazil 20 Injection 2 to 4 mL/400 kg bodyweight) intramuscularly.
Sheep. Ketamine base 22 mg/kg bodyweight (Ketamil Injection 2.2 mL/10 kg bodyweight) intramuscularly combined with acetylpromazine 0.55 mg/kg bodyweight (acetylpromazine 5.5 mg/10 kg bodyweight) intramuscularly.
Pigs. Ketamine base 10 to 15 mg/kg bodyweight (Ketamil Injection 1 to 1.5 mL/10 kg bodyweight) intramuscularly combined with xylazine base 0.5 to 1.0 mg/kg bodyweight (Xylazil 20 Injection 0.25 to 0.5 mL/10 kg bodyweight) intramuscularly.
Dogs. Xylazine base 2.2 mg/kg bodyweight (Xylazil 20 Injection 1.65 mL/15 kg bodyweight) intramuscularly followed 10 to 15 minutes later by ketamine base 11 mg/kg bodyweight (Ketamil Injection 1.65 mL/15 kg bodyweight) intravenously to effect. This regimen provides chemical restraint and analgesia suitable for minor surgery, dentistry or restraint during examination.
Cats.Ketamil alone. Intramuscular: ketamine base 15 to 20 mg/kg bodyweight (Ketamil Injection 0.75 to 1.0 mL/5 kg bodyweight). Intravenous: ketamine base 5 to 6 mg/kg bodyweight (Ketamil Injection 0.25 to 0.3 mL/5 kg bodyweight).
Ketamil in combination with xylazine base. Ketamine base 11 to 22 mg/kg bodyweight (Ketamil Injection 0.55 to 1.1 mL/5 kg bodyweight) intramuscularly preceded by xylazine base 0.55 to 1.1 mg/kg (Xylazil 20 Injection 0.14 to 0.28 mL/5 kg bodyweight) intramuscularly.
Goats. Ketamine base 11 mg/kg bodyweight (Ketamil Injection 1.1 mL/10 kg bodyweight) intravenously preceded by xylazine base 0.22 mg/kg bodyweight (Xylazil 20 Injection 0.11 mL/10 kg bodyweight) intramuscularly.
Reptiles.Sedation. Ketamine base 20 to 40 mg/kg bodyweight (Ketamil Injection 0.2 to 0.4 mL/kg bodyweight) intramuscularly.
Birds. Ketamil should not be used in poultry producing meat or eggs for human consumption.
Birds under 100 g. Ketamine base 0.1 to 0.2 mg/g bodyweight (Ketamil Injection 0.1 to 0.2 mL/100 g bodyweight) intramuscularly. 250 to 500 g. Ketamine base 0.05 to 0.1 mg/g bodyweight (Ketamil Injection 0.25 to 0.5 mL/500 g bodyweight) intramuscularly. 500 g to 1 kg. Ketamine base 0.02 to 0.1 mg/g bodyweight (Ketamil Injection 0.2 to 1.0 mL/kg bodyweight) intramuscularly. Over 3 kg. Ketamine base 0.02 to 0.05 mg/g bodyweight (Ketamil Injection 1.0 to 2.5 mL/5 kg bodyweight) intramuscularly.
Note. Use of Ketamil alone does not produce satisfactory analgesia in the domestic chicken. In pigeons, Ketamil alone does not produce a state of anaesthesia, even at high doses.
Wombats, koalas. Ketamine base 25 mg/kg bodyweight (Ketamil Injection 0.25 mL/kg bodyweight) intramuscularly.
Camels. Ketamine base 1 to 2 mg/kg bodyweight (Ketamil Injection 1 to 2 mL/100 kg bodyweight) intramuscularly or intravenously combined with xylazine 1 to 2 mg/kg bodyweight (Xylazil 20 Injection 5 to 10 mL/100 kg bodyweight) intramuscularly or intravenously.
Deer. The following dosages are for combination ketamine-xylazine intramuscular administration. Fallow deer. Ketamine base 4 mg/kg (Ketamil 1.6 mL/40 kg). Xylazine base 4 mg/kg (Xylazil 100 1.6 mL/40 kg). Red deer. Ketamine base 2?3 mg/kg (Ketamil 0.8?1.2 mL/40 kg). Xylazine base 2?3 mg/kg (Xylazil 100 0.8?1.2 mL/40 kg). Chital deer. Ketamine base 1.5?2 mg/kg (Ketamil 0.6?0.8 mL/40 kg). Xylazine base 1.5?2 mg/kg (Xylazil 100 0.6?0.8 mL/40 kg). Rusa deer. Ketamine base 2?3 mg/kg (Ketamil 0.8?1.2 mL/40 kg). Xylazine base 2?3 mg/kg (Xylazil 100 0.8?1.2 mL/40 kg).
For intravenous injection, administer half the corresponding intramuscular dose.

CONTRAINDICATIONS

Use in animals with renal insufficiency and in animals with a history of epilepsy.
