Ilium Sedaquin Gel

Actions
Sedaquin Gel contains the clinically proven and well accepted neuroleptic agent, acepromazine maleate. Acepromazine maleate is a CNS depressant with associated activity on the autonomic system. It possesses antispasmodic and hypothermic properties but little, if any, analgesia, so additional precautions in handling temperamental animals and compatible pain control is advised for interventions that could cause pain.

Sedaquin Gel is a low-volume formulation with a rapid onset of action with sedation occurring within 30-60 minutes following administration and persisting for up to 6 to 12 hours, depending on the dosage administered.

Indications
Sedaquin Gel is an oral tranquiliser which provides rapid, dose dependant, relaxant and sedative effects in horses. Sedaquin Gel provides a safe convenient and effective method for quietening excitable or nervous horses during training, transport, confinement or minor surgical and non-surgical procedures such as dentistry and shoeing.

Directions for use
The required dose may vary depending on the individual temperament of the animal.
When administering to male horses, geldings or stallions, use the lowest dose recommended to produce the required effect. Exceeding the recommended dose will not necessarily increase the sedative effects of Sedaquin Gel.

Strong sedation
0.3-0.5mg/kg bodyweight, Horses 450-500kg: 4-7ml

Light sedation
0.15-0.2mg/kg bodyweight, Horses 450-500kg 2-3ml

Sedaquin Gel is not recommended for light sedation in foals or ponies less than 175kg, as doses less than 1ml cannot be accurately administered.
Administer Sedaquin Gel into the horse’s mouth. Remove cap from nozzle, turn ring to required dose setting, insert nozzle into mouth and depress plunger to deposit gel on back of the tongue. Lift chin and hold mouth closed for a few seconds to ensure the full dose is retained in the mouth.Replace cap on nozzle after use. During sedation horses will normally retain visual and auditory acuity, therefore loud sounds and rapid movements should be avoided.
Tranquilising effect may be more pronounced if feed and water intake is limited during a period of five hours before dosing.

Composition
Acepromazine Maleate (ACP) 35mg/mL.

Contraindications
This product is contraindicated for use in breeding stallions as paralysis of the retractor penis muscle has been associated with the use of parenterally administered acepromazine maleate in horses.
Safety in pregnant and lactating mares has not been established, therefore use in these animals is not recommended.
This product is contraindicated in animals with epilepsy or those already exhibiting severe behavioural excitement.
Tranquilisers are additive to the actions of other depressants and hypotensive agents. Use of this product in conjunction with organophosphates and/or procaine hydrochloride is contraindicated as it may enhance activity and potential toxicity.
Adrenaline (epinephrine) is contraindicated in the treatment of acute hypotension caused by overdose of acepromazine maleate as it may cause further depression of systemic blood pressure. Noradrenaline (norepinephrine) and/or supportive therapy may be used to counteract the cardiovascular effects of overdosage.

Precautions
Reversible penile paralysis may occur in horses sedated with acepromazine but retraction of the penis should occur within 2-3 hours.
Acepromazine maleate can have profound effects on the cardiovascular system and should be administered with caution to horses exhibiting signs of debilitation, congestive heart failure, sympathetic blockage, hypovolaemia, especially post-traumatic, or shock. Use with caution in elderly or very young patients as they have less cardiovascular reserve. Elderly horses, horses with liver disease and foals under 3-6 months of age may metabolise acepromazine malaete less effectively and reduced dosage should be considered. Care should be taken when transporting sedated horses, as drowsiness may reduce ability to maintain balance.
