Ilium Once a Day Cephalexin

Actions
Cephalexin is a first generation Cephalosporin antibiotic with a bactericidal mode of action.
It is the antibiotic of choice where long term treatment is required such as pyoderma, abscesses.
Cephalexin is also secreted un-metabolized in urine and therefore provides high and sustained antibiotic levels for the treatment of urinary tract infections.

Cephalexin shows very good efficacy against gram positive bacteria, particularly those associated with canine pyoderma (e.g. staphylococcus intermedius), and acute urinary tract infections (e.g. Staph aureus, S. intermedius,
S. epidermis). Although the efficacy against gram negative bacteria varies Klebsiella spp, Proteus mirabilis and Esherichia coli, are generally sensitive to cephalexin, but Pseudomonas aeruginosa is generally resistant to the drug. Cephalexin is resistant to staphylococcal penicillinase but is sensitive to ß-lactamases produced by many gram negative organisms.
