Ilium BenacillinInjection Actions Long acting penicillin for parenteral treatment of infections caused by susceptible bacteria. Procaine penicillin provides high initial levels (reaches peak blood concentrations 2 to 3 hours after i.m. injection), followed by therapeutic blood levels from the more slowly absorbed Benzathine penicillin for 4 to 5 days.
The object of repository penicillins is to maintain therapeutic plasma concentrations with as few injections as possible. The first of the antibiotics, Penicillin remains one of the safest and most effective by inhibiting the construction of the cell wall, primarily excreted in the urine and at high levels in the bile. Benzylpenicillin is not effective orally. Penicillin is bactericidal against most Gram-positive organisms except where resistance has occurred, particularly staphylococci. Excretion from the plasma is very rapid. It is rapidly distributed to the tissues; high concentrations in the kidney, liver, lung skin & intestines.
Toxicity is very rare in animals. Safe to use in pregnant animals.
