Actions
Ilium Ketoprofen Injection is a sterile injection containing 100 mg/mL Ketoprofen for intramuscular or slow intravenous injection in horses and cattle.

Indications
General: For the suppression of untoward inflammatory reactions and associated pain and fever.

Musculoskeletal
Traumatic joint and connective tissue disease, Osteo-arthritis, Exertional myopathy, Tenosynovitis, Tendon and ligament sprains.

Surgery
Post surgical inflammation, Post abdominal surgery, Pre-administration in selected surgical procedures.

Ophthalmology
Traumatic corneal ulcers, Keratitis, Anterior and posterior uveitis and Orbital trauma

Colic
Ketoprofen has an equivalent analgesic affect to flunixin in cases of visceral pain (Betley et al 1991). Ketoprofen should be used in colics where surgery will not be conducted for economic reasons, or where an accurate diagnosis indicates that surgery will not be required.

Directions for use
Administer by intramuscular or slow intravenous injection. Care should be taken when using the intravenous route to ensure that none of the injection escapes into the perivascular tissues as irritation and inflammatory reactions may occur.
Horses: 2.2 mg/kg bodyweight, equivalent to 10 mL per 450 kg bodyweight, once daily for up to 5 days.
Cattle: 3 mg/kg bodyweight, equivalent to 3 mL per 100 kg bodyweight, once daily for 1-3 days. IM injections should be given in the anterior half of the neck.
If used in performance horses, regulations of relevant authorities regarding medication should be observed.

Contraindications
DO NOT USE in animals less than 6 weeks of age. This product is contraindicated in cattle and horses with gastro-intestinal ulceration or severe renal insufficiency. NSAIDS have the potential to produce adverse effects. The most commonly encountered are gastric irritation and possible gut ulceration. Safety of use in pregnant mares has not been determined. Administer by slow intravenous injection only.

Ketoprofen possesses a wide therapeutic index; injections of twenty five times the therapeutic dose will produce only mild toxicity (Gregoricka MJ et al 1990). However, veterinary surgeons should maintain a close clinical watch on all patients receiving NSAID therapy.

Withholding Period
Meat: DO NOT USE less than 4 days (cattle) and 28 days (horses) before slaughter for human consumption.
Milk: NIL.

Pharmacology
Ketoprofen is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory which has been shown to inhibit cyclo-oxygenase pathways of arachidonic acid metabolism. Ketoprofen is an aryl-propionic acid derivative. It is a non-narcotic analgesic, anti-inflammatory and anti-pyretic agent for use in cattle and horses.

Storage
Store below 30ºC (room temperature). Store upright. Protect from light.
