Ilium Thiopentone Actions For general anaesthesia in Dogs, Cats, Horses, Cattle, Sheep and Pigs with a rapid induction and short recovery period.
Indications For general anaesthesia in Dogs, Cats, Horses, Cattle, Sheep and Pigs.
Directions for use Use the contents of this bottle within 4 days of reconstitution. Do not use if solution is not clear. Administer by intravenous injection only.
Ilium Thiopentone is in powder form, in sterile, sealed vials from which a solution is prepared by the addition of Water for Injections BP. Diluents other than Water for Injections BP may contain ions which diminish the keeping quality of the reconsituted solution. Exposure of the sterile powder to air will compromise the sterility of the powder. Dissolve the contents in 100ml of Water for Injections BP, immediately before use, to give a solution containing 50mg/ml. Dosage should be reduced when pre-anaesthetic tranquilisers or sedatives are administered.
Dogs: 15-17mg/kg bodyweight Cats: 9-11mg/kg bodyweight Horses: Premedicated 5.9-12.9mg/kg bodyweight Calves: Premedicated 4.5mg/kg bodyweight Cattle: Premedicated 8.1-9.9mg/kg bodyweight Sheep: 9-14mg/kg bodyweight Pigs: 5-11mg/kg bodyweight
Presentation Sterile powder for reconstitution. 5g, with Water for Injections BP 100ml.
Composition Thiopentone Sodium (Sterile) Powder for Injection: 5g (100%w/w)
Contraindications Perivascularly injected Ilium Thiopentone will be irritant; if this occurs, infiltrate the area with saline solution to dilute the Thiopentone and minimise irritation.
Precautions Ilium Thiopentone has little effect upon blood pressure but may depress and slow respiration. In rare cases of laryngeal spasm, an open air passage must be maintained. Overdosing may cause respiratory failure. In this event artificial respiration and other respiratory stimulants should be used.
In the presence of shock, anaemia, liver damage or kidney damage, thiopentone sodium must be administered with great care.Pre-anaesthetic agents, analgesics, some tranquilizers, corticosteroids and sulfonamides may potentiate the drug and thus reduce the amount necessary to induce a given depth of anaesthesia.Since the placenta is not a protective barrier against sodium thiopentone or any other barbiturate, the full anaesthetic dose should not be used in pregnant animals. Light doses of this drug may be used as an induction agent in such cases. To reduce the chance of vomiting and excessive salivation, food should be withheld for 12 hours prior to administration where possible. As with all general anaesthetics, occasional hypersensitive animals will respond atypically to this drug.
Withholding Period Do No Use less than 28 days before slaughter for human consumption. Milk collected from cows within 7 days following treatment, Must Not Be Used for human consumption or processing. This milk should not be fed to bobby calves.
Storage Sterile Powder – store below 30º (room temperature).Reconstituted solutions are stable for three days at room temperature, and for seven days if refrigerated. Protect from light. Do not use if the solution is not clear.
